Strut present the debut compilation by one of the UK’s leading Afro, Caribbean and Latin music party collectives, SOFRITO. Comprising DJs Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis alongside The Mighty Crime Minister, Sofrito has consistently combined the serious vinyl hunter’s ear for amazing records with a stylish, accessible approach, rocking dancefloors worldwide since their inception in 2007.

From their legendary Tropical Warehouse parties in East London to the clubs and bars of Brooklyn, from beach parties in Greece to festivals and clubs across Europe including WOMAD and the Big Chill, Sofrito has now become a worldwide proposition. The club has also attracted a string of A-list guests for live performances including Manu Dibango, Poets Of Rhythm, Souljazz Orchestra and Quantic.The club’s graphics by artist Lewis Heriz have become an important a part of its identity, with each event accompanied by unique hand-drawn poster art, each now a collector’s piece in its own right. And, running alongside their events, their Sofrito Specials 12” imprint has made available exclusive edits of impossible-to-find rarities. Their ‘African Soul Power’ edit was picked by Gilles Peterson as one of his re-works of 2008.

For their debut compilation, Sofrito get the party started with 15 dynamite tropical grooves old and new ranging from cumbia, Congolese guitar, calypso and highlife. Highlights include an exclusive cumbia by Quantic, ‘Cumbia Mochilla’, a new edit of a rare Victor Uwaifo disco cut and firing Carnival jams from old-timers Roaring Lion and Mighty Shadow.

Gus Gus return to Kompakt this month, for their seventh album, Arabian Horse.

Their second full-length for the Cologne label, it finds the group joined by vocalist Urður Hákonardóttir and Hjaltalin’s Högni Elisson for songs that stem from a series of initial recordings at a self-made studio in an isolated cottage in the middle of an Icelandic lava field. Some mothers do ‘ave ‘em.

Alexander Borovik comes from the rap scene, but with this record he moved in a new direction of rock, blues and jazz. And he has done an amazing job. This an album close to my heart. So far the best i have heard this year. For some of you Russian music might be a bit out there. Open your heart to the sound and i wouldn’t be suprised if you fell in love this record as i have. TM Juke and The Jack Baker Trio present ‘Boto And The Second Liners’. A feast of carnival-spirited songs, this is an original album of pure party music that pays homage to the different rhythms of the Americas, moving from the ’80s New York street party feel of junkyard, go-go music and old school inspired hip hop; through the funk and soul of Memphis and the Mardi Gras of New Orleans; and south to Latin America and Brazilian samba. The record boasts some great guest performers – most notably singers Alice Russell, Kathrin deBoer of Belleruche and Andreya Triana, and genre-bending Spanish singer Gecko Turner (Lovemonk).

Very, very interesting project! The sounds of the harp, New Age rhythm and Chinese motifs in the melody makes this music truly exquisite!
Watch out for new music by Bei Bei and UK producer Shawn Lee which marries a unique blend of ancient tradition with studio trickery and spiritual jazz. This uplifting, genre-bending, soundclash recalls the afrocentric harping of Dorothy Ashby, the hypnotic style of Alice Coltrane, and the organic electronics of Four Tet and Quantic.

After a series of remixes, “Zombies In The Disco” is the first own release of the Upper-Austrian A.G.Trio. The three protagonists Andy Korg, Roland von der Aist and Aka Tell – known for their solo-projects – bring in an enjoyable, partly ironic and laid back approach to dance-music.  The EP presents the typical A.G.Trio style, approved in numerous live-shows. A characteristic mixture of House, Techno and Breaks shrugging off style-purism and prepared for real partys.
